Two documents decide more than the whole sign-up form (South Africa)

Filling in a registration form takes a few minutes and almost nothing on it is hard to undo. The part that matters afterwards is smaller and physical: a photo document and a proof of address, either accepted or waiting. That pair is what attaches a person to an account — and what stands between a balance and the way out.

Registration takes a few minutes: an email confirmed by a six-digit code, a phone number confirmed as well, a password chosen. Then comes verification, which asks for a government-issued photo ID — passport, national ID or driver's licence — and a proof of residential address. It is usually approved within about 24 hours. Until it is, the account exists but the exit does not.

What each piece of the file is actually for

Four items, four different jobs. Only two of them are documents.

Notice that neither document has anything to do with trading. They belong to the money route, which is why leaving them for later is a scheduling mistake rather than a paperwork one.

What sends a document back for a second try

A rejected upload is rarely a judgement about the person. It is almost always a property of the image or a mismatch between two pieces of text, and all of them are cheap to avoid on the first attempt.

Corners cut off. A photograph that crops an edge of the document removes part of what is being read. Lay it flat, get all four corners inside the frame.
Glare and blur. A phone camera at an angle, or a document under a lamp, produces a picture a person cannot read either. Daylight, no flash, hold still.
Out of date. An expired document proves who somebody used to be. Check the date before uploading, not after the wait.
Names that do not match. The name typed into the form and the name printed on the document have to be the same person, spelled the same way — initials, middle names and married names included.
An address that belongs to someone else. A proof of address is proof about you, so a document in a parent's or landlord's name does not stand in for one in yours.

What you can do while the check is running

The waiting period is not idle time. A demo account needs no verification at all, so the platform, the order ticket and the four money lines can be learned while the documents are being read. What is worth deciding in the same window is the account currency, because that one is fixed at creation and the creation screen is where the options are listed. A rand payment into an account held in another currency is converted by the payment provider on the way in, so the decision belongs before the first deposit rather than after it. Two settings to finish before you close the tab

Turn on two-step verification while you are already inside: Settings → Security settings → 2-step Verification, using an authenticator app, email or SMS. If the device is later lost, the security type can be reset to email, so the choice is not a trap.

And note which password is which. The account area password signs you in to the place where money moves; each trading account carries its own separate platform password. How long does the check normally take?

Registration is a few minutes; identity verification is usually approved within about 24 hours.

Which documents count as a photo ID?

A government-issued one: a passport, a national ID or a driver's licence.

Can I trade before verification finishes?

A demo needs none of it. For anything involving real money, treat the check as the step that has to be behind you before money needs to come out.

My document came back. Does that mean I was refused?

Usually it means the image or a spelling could not be read. Corners, glare, expiry dates and name matching cover most repeat attempts.

Does the address document have to be in my name?

Yes — it is proof about you. A document in a relative's or landlord's name proves something about them instead.

Is the six-digit code the same as two-step verification?

No. The code confirms the email address at sign-up; two-step verification is a separate setting that protects every later sign-in.

Do I have to verify again for a second trading account?

No. The check sits with the profile, and a profile can hold up to 100 MT4 and 100 MT5 accounts, 200 in total.

Is there a bonus for opening an account?
